If you were to ask someone to name a watch brand, most likely they’ll name Rolex. Seen on the wrists of Cristiano Ronaldo, Rihanna and Victoria Beckham, Rolex has been a huge name in the luxury watch industry for decades. But why are they so popular and worn by so many?
The history of Rolex
Rolex was created in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf in London, England. The brand was then moved to Switzerland after the first world war. Rolex was a timepiece distribution business, but once the brand moved to Switzerland, they started manufacturing and designing their own watches. Two years later, in 1910, a watch made by Rolex was the first watch in the world to be certified as a chronometer. This was a pinnacle moment for Rolex as this began its association with both their precision and accuracy. By 1926 Rolex had already manufactured the first waterproof watch, again showing that their brand is always ahead of the game when it comes to quality watchmaking.
Why are Rolex watches so sought after?
Especially if you’re new in the watch market, it can be pretty daunting knowing the history of Rolex and why they are so successful and sought after. There are so many reasons as to why so many people opt for a Rolex, so here are a few.
Appearance
Whether you’re wearing a Rolex with a suit, or leggings, it still works with whatever outfit. That’s the beauty of a Rolex – its versatility. A Rolex oozes class and a lot of people opt for a Rolex because of the different styles they offer.
Value
Most Rolex watches increase steadily in price as time goes on. It’s an investment piece. In 2021 more people are wanting to buy a Rolex as an investment, as they usually make money in the future. The models which are guaranteed to make you money include the Rolex Datejust, Submariner and Yacht-Master.
Status
Another reason why Rolex watches are so popular is that they have status and established history. Some people buy a Rolex to show off their status, as a killer watch can act as a statement accessory with any outfit.
Marketing
Like a lot of modern brands, the success of the brand is often down to clever and unique marketing. Rolex is certainly no different. Creator Hans Wilsdorf chose the name Rolex because it’s easy to say, regardless of language.
When Rolex created the first waterproof timepiece, they initially gave the watch to Mercedes Glietze, an Olympic swimmer, who wore the watch around her neck when she swam the English channel. The Oyster watch was put to its ultimate test in this challenge, but it passed the test and came out of the water working fine and was unaffected. This interaction between the Olympian and Rolex was on the front page of the Daily Mail, giving the brand free publicity. Unlike most Rolex marketing, this campaign was particularly wild.
Rolexes are not easy to get your hands on sometimes
The phrase ‘you want what you can’t have’ comes to mind. Some Rolex models are extremely difficult to get hold of, which makes buyers want these models more. For example, the Daytona model is sometimes a rare find, as Rolex only brings as many watches into their stores as they expect to sell.
When should I buy my first Rolex?
It’s fair to say that there is no age requirement on a Rolex. If you want to buy a Rolex aged 22, and can then go for it! Saying that, it’s advised that the best time to treat yourself with a Rolex watch is when you can afford the exact model you’ve had your eye on. The average Rolex buyer is aged 40-45, but that doesn’t mean that if you’re younger you can’t buy a Rolex. In fact, recently Rolex has seen a 15% increase in younger buyers aged 25-30.
Rolex watches make a statement
Rolex watches are popular for a reason – their exclusivity, design and stability in value being some of those reasons. But, regardless of which model you do end up settling on, a Rolex will always offer you style and an extremely well-made luxury watch.
