We’re covered in it, literally, head to toe. Our skin does so much for us on a daily basis, from protection and filtration, to absorption and light radiation. What we put in and on our bodies directly impacts our skin health, in addition to our internal and mental health. Acne, dry skin and redness, premature aging and discoloration are common signs of the health state of our skin, and, ultimately,  our overall health. Let’s take a look at a few skin care tips to get a handle on best practices for taking care of your skin.

1. Acne. Many of us have experienced this pesky, often self-confidence-deteriorating scenario on our face, chest, back and other areas. While it can be caused by many instigators from the inside of your body, its external appearance is always uncomfortable, unsightly and painful to the touch. No matter the season, from the heat of summer to the temperature depths of winter, fighting breakouts can be helped with some topical applications and products. Restoring your confidence and skin’s natural glow doesn’t have to be intimidating or out of reach for anyone. Keeping skin clean, moisturized and healthy takes only a bit of change in your skincare protocol and routine. Acne can happen at any age, and it doesn’t have to be a burden or something to fear. There are easy and very viable solutions for acne treatment at our fingertips.

2. Dry skin. Dry skin can come from internal or external causes. Internal causes can be a result of hormonal factors or dehydration, whereas external causes can be attributed to extreme temperatures and weather elements. Applying a good quality lotion is one way to help the problem towards the end of its cycle, but staying hydrated through your diet and consumption is the best way to prevent dry skin. Dry skin can be painful and uncomfortable, especially when it’s in a more extreme state. Keeping a good quality lotion handy for the more extreme situations is definitely something you’ll want to do, so that you’re not in pain or get into having dry, cracked skin. If you’re still having problems with dry skin after altering your consumption and quality of topical applications, you might consider looking into hormonal causes, such as thyroid imbalances, or others that your healthcare professional can provide a diagnosis  of.

3. Redness. Redness in our skin tones is sometimes very natural and common, but other times it can indicate a more serious underlying problem. Redness can communicate symptoms like fever, sunburn, over-exertion, incongruencies with foods or other consumptives, a burn or infection, busted blood vessels, and more (though these listed are the most common). Redness of the skin is a symptom that should be taken seriously and looked into, especially if it’s long-lasting, or sudden and severe. If you dive  deeper to discover the cause of the change in coloration, you might be able to get ahead of a more serious health concern. While it may not be a serious case, it’s better to look into the change early on, rather than react to it when it’s more advanced. Simple diet changes, such as removing gluten from the diet, can prove a great help for many.

Whether you’re dealing with these symptoms, or others in your skin care routine, keep in mind that there are a number of factors that can cause these surface signals, as well as a plethora of options that can help prevent or heal these skin abnormalities, no matter what they may be. Each person is different, and it’s always best to check with your healthcare provider to ensure selections and treatments are safe for and compatible with your needs.
