One topic of discussion that always seems to crop up in fashion, is the use of retouching and unrealistic images in fashion magazines. In general, it’s a surprise when you see fashion photographs without a sense of fantasy such as the recent unretouched Aerie lingerie campaign. Vogue UK editor Alexandra Shulman recently sat down for an interview with BBC Radio 2 and revealed her thoughts on the matter. Specifically, the portrayal of a glamorous lifestyle in magazines, what sells on the newsstand and the use of thin models in general. Check out some choice quotes below, but you can see more from the interview on The Telegraph.
On the criticism of thin models in magazines and why people want to see fantasy:
“People always say ‘why do you have thin models? That’s not what real people look like’ But nobody really wants to see a real person looking like a real person on the cover of Vogue. She then goes on to say, “I think Vogue is a magazine that’s about fantasy to some extent and dreams, and an escape from real life.”
Two Times a Charm – British model Cara Delevingne lands her second Vogue UK cover for the magazine’s January 2014 edition. On the cover Cara wears a black tuxedo jacket, animal print shirt and leather pants designed for Saint Laurent by Hedi Slimane. The new issue of Vogue hits stores on December 9th in the UK.
Kate Does Vogue – We think it’s safe to say that Kate Moss has more Vogue covers than any other model, and the British beauty adds another to the list with the December issue of Vogue UK which marks her 34th cover appearance for the magazine. In the image, Kate wears a feather cape with a pearl-encrusted collar from Alexander McQueen photographed by Tim Walker. The new issue features John Galliano, French actress Léa Seydoux and more.
Fourth Time’s a Charm – Daria Werbowy gets a bit rebellious on the September cover of Vogue UK, sporting a nose ring and coral-hued jacket. Who could ever predict a facial piercing on a Vogue cover? Daria was photographed by Patrick Demarchelier for the cover and FYI, this is her fourth cover for the edition which hits newsstands on August 5th in the UK.
