Lee Daniels Fairytale Theater–For the spring-summer issue of CR Fashion Book, the magazine continues to look at fairy tales with a story starring top model Joan Smalls and actor on the rise, Michael B. Jordan. The pair pose for director Lee Daniels (known for “The Butler”) in his first ever fashion editorial featuring a modern reinterpretation of notable fairy tales. Jahl Fischer and Paolo Nieddu style Joan (who stars in Fendi’s spring ads) as the beauty channels Snow White, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty while Michael plays a handsome Prince Charming.
Joan for iCB–Marking his fourth season as creative director of iCB, Prabal Gurung enlists leading model Joan Smalls (who appeared in his brand’s spring ’13 ads) for the spring-summer 2014 campaign from the label. The advertisements are inspired by the holographic materials of the new line with a focus on fluorescent light work influenced by the creations of Dan Flavin. Daniel Jackson captures Joan in a set of sleek, studio images while stylist Tiina Laakkonen styles the Puerto Rican beauty in crisp whites and techno materials.
Fendi’s Water Walls–Following up a preview, Fendi has released its full spring-summer 2014 campaign photographed by Karl Lagerfeld. Top models Nadja Bender and Joan Smalls pose for the German creative, playing mirrored images while working it in front of an icy water wall backdrop. Nadja and Joan model geometric prints, furry bags and sheath dresses in the colorful set.

Joan on ELLE – Top model Joan Smalls covers the January issue of ELLE US. shining in a look from Givenchy’s spring-summer 2014 collection. Despite being one of the leading faces in fashion and a spokesperson for Estee Lauder, Joan admits that some in the industry don’t embrace diversity when it comes to models. “People hide behind the word aesthetic. They say, ‘Well, it’s just that designer’s aesthetic.’ But when you see 18 seasons in a row and not one single model outside a certain skin color…? There are people in the industry who are advocates, who support diversity. And there are people who do not. I don’t get it. Beauty is universal. These doors have to open,” the model tells ELLE.

Autumn Deluxe – With a collection featuring art deco-inspired details and monochromatic prints, the fall 2013 campaign from Hugo Boss’ Boss line stars top models Anja Rubik and Joan Smalls lounging in a minimal setting. Photographed by Tom Munro, the duo poses in a New York studio wearing a mix of feminine frocks and sharp tailoring.
Romantic Edge – Joan Smalls is the latest model to be enlisted for one of H&M’s many style books. This time, the Puerto Rican beauty stars in the fashion retailer’s “Romantic Edge” shoot featuring graphic black and white looks with lace detailing. In the sunny images, Joan poses in a garden setting wearing youthful styles ranging from casual denim to feminine sheer.
Joan in Givenchy – Joan Smalls attended the 20th Annual Cinema Against AIDS Gala in Cannes yesterday wearing a look from Givenchy’s fall 2013 collection. The top model wore an evening dress in skin tulle embroidered with multicolour flower sequins. The look was paired with black organza embroidered sweater, black cable belt and black nappa leather sandals from the label.
