No one thinks you’re going to be at your leanest and healthiest if you’re throwing back cheeseburgers, burritos, and pizzas. But then, while it’s reasonably easy to plan on making healthy main meals, a lot of people allow their snack times to slip through the cracks.

Consider that mealtimes will likely only occupy 1/6th of your waking hours. This means that when hunger strikes, and the next meal is a few hours away, you’re going to be tempted to reach for something, anything. Having the right stuff nearby instead of sugary, fattening junk food is key to feeling satisfied, without expanding your waistline and risk for diabetes.

It’s a well-known fact that hunger isn’t only a feeling, but a real need for most people. It can take weeks, or even months, to really threaten a healthy person’s well-being through starvation. If you’re no longer hungry because of some jerky or a handful of almonds, you no longer need to hit the vending machine.

Muscle tone is maintained by keeping two things high in your diet – protein and monounsaturated fats. While some people think that all fats are bad, monounsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids are actually great for you. Dehydrated meats without nitrates are also good sources of protein and monounsaturated fats.
