Love it or Leave it
Fashion is a great industry because you see things come and go. Some trends are immortalized and make it into the fashion pantheon of greats, while others are buried in the woods like a shameful secret. One thing is certain, every piece from fashion throughout history helps influence the future.
While fashion is a future-focused industry, it is important to look at the past to see where we are today. Just getting a sense of how far we have come is worth looking back. Whether it was a lasting piece of influential fashion or a flop of a fad that only had one brief and glorious moment in the limelight, we put together a list of some of the strangest fashion trends from 2017:
Mud Jeans – This is certainly a peculiar fashion choice. For a while in 2017, the faux muddy jeans look was a real thing. That’s right, people would willingly buy brand new pairs of jeans that look like they muddy, and they stay that way no matter how many times you wash them. Jeans are an article of clothing that goes through a lot of real and bizarrely fake distress. So the only question remains, was this a flop or fashion.
Clear Panel Jeans – We told you, jeans are always getting some attention in the fashion industry, good or bad. This particular trend might even be stranger than the previous one. Some jeans were being manufactured for a while with clear panels in them. This means you can see through the jeans fabric, typically near the knees. This offers more protection and warmth than the ripped jeans look, but without the style. Strange or smart?
The Dad Bag – 2017 was an interesting time, which is something that is showcased clearly when you take a look at the Dad bag. Nothing more than a fanny pack that was made to look like a fat, hairy belly, the Dad bag falls into the category of, just because we can, doesn’t mean we should. This strange fashion trend may come with the side effect of questioning where humanity is heading.
The Romper – When you have eliminated all of the possible causes, look to the impossible ones. Getting grown men to wear a full body romper willingly was probably one of the most impressive feats of 2017. These colorful, full-body suits were half joke, half fashion statement, all strange. Trends like these go to show you that new isn’t always better. The most interesting thing about the romper is that to use the bathroom in one you have to take the entire suit off.
Socks and Sandals – Once considered to be the height of fashion fails, a bit of experimentation and boredom has brought back this dubious combo. Gucci came out with a sock and sandal combo that is built-in together. A strange choice to most, if you ever feel the need to try this combination, be prepared to fork over just under $2,000.
