In the film, Ruth and Joel play an interracial couple in 1950’s Virginia who fight for their right to marry. Talking about her connection to her character Mildred, Ruth reveals, “Land and home and community are super important. When I was playing her, I tried to imagine I couldn’t go home again because of whom I married. It must have drained the lifeblood from her. When I was a kid in Ireland, there were not very many black people. I was very much like the strange brown thing, intriguing and cute. I didn’t experience racism there. The first time I did was in London. It was that moment that you realize you’re black. A kind of lifting of the veil.”

‘Loving’ Movie

Directed by Jeff Nichols, ‘Loving’ hits theaters on November 3rd in the US. The movie tells the true story of an interracial couple, Mildred and Richard Loving. In the 1950’s, the pair were sentenced to prison for getting married. Joel Edgerton tells Vogue about the film’s message, “A robin’s a robin, a sparrow is a sparrow.. That’s the double beauty of the film. It’s a racial period piece, but it also echoes very loudly today.”
