You have bought the engagement ring, and now it is time to select the ideal wedding ring to accompany it. If you do not frequently buy jewellery, finding a diamond ring for your D-day may not be easy. But with a proper guide, you can get your hands on the right piece.

Check out the instructions below to make an informed decision.

Narrow down your ring choices

Narrowing down your options for a diamond wedding ring may appear overwhelming, but there is no reason to panic. Take one step at a time and begin with the type of metal – do you wish your wedding ring to be of the same metal as your engagement ring? Do you want the same kind of ring that your husband has chosen for himself? Work on these questions so that you can decide what you want and then start shopping.

Commence an early search process

Allow yourself at least 2 to 3 months to try various diamond rings (halo, bezel, prong, and solitaire). If you want engraved diamonds, then you will need more time. Research prices, browse for color, clarity, cut, carat weight, and revisit rings you find attractive during this period.

Blend metals

You yearn for platinum while your would-be husband is eager to wear yellow gold, rose gold, or white gold ring. Being fashion-forward, you may opt to blend the two metals in the form of braids to keep both of you happy. However, there is no harm in choosing a completely different metal for your ring. After all, choosing something that caters to your individual preferences and loving each other at the same time is what living happily ever after entails.

Think about your lifestyle

Select a diamond ring that can easily become a part of your life as you will have to adorn it daily. If you play any instrument or are into sports, a slim ring with rounded edges is appropriate. Platinum is best for women who always keep themselves active because even after repeated scratches, the metal does not wear away.

Fix a budget

Now that you have tried on several rings, made up your mind to what metal you want for your wedding, researched prices, it is time to set a budget for the jewelry. Spending about three per cent of your total wedding expense on the ring is standard practice. For embellishments and diamond engravings, the cost will rise. In engravings, the font used, the number of characters, and whether the engraving is machine or hand-made are factored in while computing the total cost of the ring(hand engraving is costlier).

Pay attention to maintenance issues

Your diamond should be clean to give out that sparkle that you saw in it the first time. Constant use can create a layer of dirt on the stone and the metal. Soak and wash it in warm, sudsy water before brushing it with an eyebrow brush or a toothbrush with swift bristles. Softness is essential to ensure that excessive pressure does not loosen the stones from their positions. Then, rinse the ring and dry it up with a lint-free piece of cloth, which is also soft.

Did you choose the right size?

Remember, you will probably wear your wedding ring forever, through all seasons and at all times, be it winter, summer, pregnancy, or exercise. Your fingers will contract and swell from cold, heat, weight gain, or retention of water. It is important to make sure that none of these changes affects you when you pick the correct ring size.

That means, never finalize just after exercising (fingers are swollen), in the morning (water is retained from the previous night, or when you feel extremely cold or hot (your hands may shrink or expand).

Better still, trace the inner circle of a ring you wear on a piece of paper or press the ring into a soap bar to make an impression.

Choose your diamond wedding ring carefully. Stick to your preferences, select a budget and ensure that the choice you make stands the test of time, just like your marriage.
