During a talk at the Metropolitan Museum of Art yesterday, Vogue editor-in-chief sat down with Aline Cho for a new even called, “The Atelier with Alina Cho”. Via Fashionista, Wintour opened about one of the most controversial magazine covers in recent memory—the Kimye Vogue cover, of course! She says about the images featuring Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, “I see the role of Vogue to reflect what’s going on in the culture. The first celebrity that I put on the cover of Vogue was Madonna, and that was considered completely controversial at the time, too. It’s such a long time ago probably no one remembers, but she was a very controversial figure.”

She continues, “I think if we just remain deeply tasteful and just put deeply tasteful people on the cover, it would be a rather boring magazine! Nobody would talk about us. It’s very important that people do talk about us.” Do you agree with Anna? Does Vogue need to have “deeply tasteful” cover stars, or should it court controversy every now and then?

  1. I think they do have to ruffle the feathers a bit. 2013 was kind of a snoozer year for Vogue. They kicked off this year being edgy with people like Lena Dunham and Kimye on the covers. They also put MODELS back on the cover which was/is fantastic. If the cover of Vogue is the same old same old people like the cover of InStyle magazine…no one’s going to talk about it.

(That said, I hope Kimye never appear in vogue again haha)

  2. SO wish fashion magazines would STOP putting celebrities on magazine covers!!! Bring back models – that’s what they’re paid for!!! I don’t care about this “celebrity culture” we seem to be stuck in – give me Karen Elson, Joan Smalls, Gisele Bunchen, etc. etc. I used to wait in anticipation to see who would be on the cover of Mademoiselle, Vogue, Elle, Harper’s Bazaar – Cindy Crawford? Kim Alexis? Linda Evangelista? There are so many amazing models out there – older and younger – use them.
