Some of us may have a little more time on our hands, and with that newfound time, why not organize some aspects of your life? It seems like a closet is always hard to keep from descending into complete chaos. Without a complete major renovation, there’s not much you can about the size of your closet, so here are some hacks to make the most of the space that you have!
Rotate Your Wardrobe
If you are dealing with a smaller closet space, a way to combat that and organize your closet at the same time is to rotate your wardrobe seasonally. Once the weather starts warming up and spring is around the corner, take those heavy coats, thick, fur-lined boots and other winter wear and put it into a few plastic tote bins. Replace those heavy items with those flowery, light sundresses, strappy sandals, and other warm-weather clothes. Rotating clothes also gives you the chance to get rid of anything that you see you haven’t been wearing, which is another great space saver!
Use a Bookshelf
A clever hack, if you have the room, is to use a bookshelf in your closet for extra storage. You can use multiple shelves to store items such as bags, shoes or folded clothing. A bookshelf also allows you to display your clothing better instead of fitting them in a dresser drawer. You are able to see what you want and grab what you need. Again, you will also see what items of clothing you are grabbing more often, and be able to get rid of clothes you don’t wear often or ever.
Change to Velvet Hangers
Changing out all of your hangers to velvet hangers may be a little pricey but in the end, it will save you space and time when it comes to your closet. Nordstorm, along with other box stores, sells large quantities of velvet hangers to get you started with this project, just make sure you look up a Nordstrom coupon before purchasing. Velvet hangers save space and don’t allow clothes to fall off and make a mess. Also, you are unable to just pull something off the hanger, so you have to see what you are grabbing and again, will know how often you are wearing clothes in your closet. They also add a touch of elegance to your closet.
Utilize Vertical Space
Organizers that can hang, either off the door or off the clothes rack, can be very valuable. Vertical hangers can organize shoes, clothes or accessories. Another way to use vertical space is to look for space after you have organized the main bulk of your closet. Fill those spots of extra space with hooks at varying heights to help hang necklaces, scarves, belts or purses.
Color-Code Items
Hang your clothes up by color, it just looks nicer and it makes it easier to find something you need. You can also color-code your folded items. When items are folded neatly, you can see your clothes better and it makes finding what you want that much easier. Updating your folding technique is another way to update your space. Try to fold things like a retail store and mimic that look with thicker textures on the bottom and lighter fabrics on the top.
