Holy MarySophie Vlaming stars in a new take of Holy Mary, mother of Jesus, for the latest issue of Avantgarde Magazine. Klaas Jan Kliphuis’ haunting images show Sophie in of modern looks paired with the traditional iconography we’re used to seeing. Styled by Roel Schagen, the Dutch beauty dons pieces from the likes of Louis Vuitton, Jil Sander, Valentino and Burberry Prorsum with transformative hair and makeup by Irena Ruben.

  1. Love the photo with the bloody tear! My favorite editorials with religious iconography are by Camilla Akrans and Steven Meisel because if you’re going to go there, you really have to push the limits, I think, and though the darker images here are fabulous, somehow the lighter colored photos here just don’t hold the same intensity, save for the first image before the cut. She has such a beautiful face and I adore that her editorials are so different from one another, that she hasn’t got just one look…
