Last month, we shared the news of France’s proposed bill that would have strict penalties for agencies employing too thin models. And now, according to Reuters, the bill has officially been passed. To recap, agents and fashion houses found to be hiring models under a certain BMI will face fines up to 75,000 euros and even jail time. What are the BMI requirements? A model must at least have a BMI of 18 making them about 121 pounds and 5’9” in height.

Will more fashion destinations follow suit? And will it be enforced?

  1. This is what the govt is focusing on… seriously??? Aren t there far more important issues? Let the agencies hire whomever they want it is not for the government to control this.. or any other industry.. i get the spirit to which it was intended.. but this paves the path for endless censoring and control…. sorry but this is over stepping.

  2. Couldnt agree more. The government needs to stay out of people’s private business. This is not a matter of the government. It never should be.
they also included an age limit of 16 thus discriminating even more and making France unhospitable for quite a few models.
